The Gosen G-Tone 5 is a 0.65mm Japanese badminton string built for one thing: the loud, metallic shot sound that signals a clean, fast hit. The 220m roll is a 10% length upgrade over the older 200m G-Tone 5 spool, giving stringers about two extra rackets worth of usable length per roll.
What makes the G-Tone 5 different
Most thin-gauge badminton strings rely on a braided side-thread construction with a resin coating applied on top. Gosen's MICRO FUSION method (patent pending) takes a different route. The core threads are first impregnated with a special resin to strengthen them. A four-link thread is then bonded between the side threads and the core using a process Gosen has not publicly disclosed. The string is finished by dipping in resin rather than surface-coating it, which fuses the core and side threads into a single high-density structure that behaves almost like a monofilament.
The G-Tone 5 increases the thickness of the MICRO FUSION film compared to the earlier G-Tone 9 (0.69mm), which produces the higher pitch in the "5" gauge. From raw yarn to finished string, each roll takes roughly three months to manufacture in Japan.
The sound: 5kHz, ~50% higher loudness
The "G" in G-Tone is for Gosen. "Tone" is the sound. The "5" is the 0.65mm gauge — and in badminton strings, thinner gauge equals higher pitch and higher rebound. The hitting frequency on the G-Tone 5 measures around 5kHz, and the perceived loudness (Sone/Bark) is approximately 50% higher than comparable 0.65mm strings from competing brands, per Gosen's own testing. In play, this translates to a sharper, more aggressive shot sound that puts pressure on the opponent on every clean hit.
Playing characteristics
- Metallic shot sound from the dipped resin construction
- High rebound from the thinner 0.65mm gauge
- Spin from the textured MICRO FUSION surface
- Sharp, crisp feel on impact, closer to a monofilament than a typical multifilament
Who the G-Tone 5 is for
This is an offensive player's string. It rewards clean technique with sound and feel, but the 0.65mm gauge is thin and will not last as long as 0.66 or 0.68mm options for players who mishit frequently. Recommended for intermediate to advanced players who want maximum shot feedback and are comfortable restringing every 15–25 hours of play. Stringers should be pulled within the 16–27 lbs tension range; pulling beyond 27 lbs on this gauge significantly increases breakage risk during installation.

G-Tone 5 vs G-Tone 9
The G-Tone 9 (0.69mm) was Gosen's first MICRO FUSION string, released in March 2014 after two years of development. The G-Tone 5 is the thinner-gauge follow-up, with a thicker MICRO FUSION film and the 0.65mm diameter that produces a higher pitch and quicker rebound. If you want maximum durability with the MICRO FUSION sound character, choose the G-Tone 9. If you want the highest pitch and sharpest feel and accept shorter string life, choose the G-Tone 5.
Stringing notes
- String yield per racket: approximately 10m, so a 220m roll yields ~22 rackets
- Best installed by an experienced stringer; thin gauges are sensitive to clamp damage and over-tension
- For tournament players, restring proactively rather than waiting for breakage — the G-Tone 5 loses its signature pitch before it actually breaks
