The Li-Ning GP20 is a polyurethane replacement base grip, supplied as a value pack of 5 at ₹320, which works out to roughly ₹64 per grip. It is the practical pack size for an individual player: enough to regrip your racket several times over a year without overbuying. SportsUncle ships genuine Li-Ning stock.
How to grip a badminton racket (step by step)
If you are here to learn how to grip and wrap a badminton racket, here is the full method using the GP20.
- Remove the old grip. Peel off the worn base grip down to the bare handle. Clean off any leftover adhesive so the new grip sits flat.
- Decide your grip hand. For a right-handed player, you wrap anticlockwise as seen from the butt end; reverse for left-handed. This makes the overlap face the right way during play.
- Start at the bottom. Peel the backing tape and stick the narrow starting end to the bottom edge of the handle, angled slightly upward.
- Wrap with even overlap. Pull firm, even tension and keep a consistent overlap of a few millimetres on each turn. Less overlap gives a thinner handle, more overlap gives a thicker one.
- Finish below the shaft. Stop before the grip reaches the shaft, cut at an angle, and secure the end with the finishing tape provided.
- Check the size. Hold the racket in your normal grip. There should be a small gap between your fingertips and the base of your thumb. If the handle feels too thin, add a thin overgrip on top; too thick, use less overlap next time.
What is the grip of a badminton racket, and why it matters
The grip is the wrap around the racket handle. It does three jobs: it sets the handle thickness to suit your hand, it gives traction so the racket does not slip when your hand sweats, and it absorbs shock from hard hits. A worn, hard, or slippery grip directly costs you control and can cause the racket to twist on off-centre shots. Most regular players replace the base grip every few months, which is why a pack of 5 lasts an individual player a long time.
Why the GP20
- Tacky PU base grip: firm, slightly sticky hold that works well straight out of the wrapper, suited to most players without breaking in
- Genuine Li-Ning quality: holds tackiness longer than cheap unbranded PU grips, so you regrip less often
- Neutral build: at around 0.75mm it slightly increases handle size, ideal as a direct base-grip replacement on most badminton rackets
- Value pack of 5: about ₹64 per grip, far cheaper than buying single grips, without the overcommitment of a bulk pack
- Works on tennis and squash too at the same 1100mm length
Replacement grip vs overgrip: which do you need?
The GP20 is a replacement base grip, applied directly to the bare handle. An overgrip is a thinner wrap applied over an existing base grip for extra tack or thickness. Most players use the GP20 as the base grip and replace it.
