How to choose a pickleball paddle

Five things decide how a paddle plays. Get these right and the brand matters much less.

1. Your level

  • Beginner: pick a wide, forgiving paddle with a 16mm core. Control matters more than power while you learn to dink and reset.
  • Intermediate: a carbon face adds spin and better feel. This is where most club players get the biggest upgrade.
  • Advanced: tour-level paddles add power and spin, but they punish mistimed shots more.

2. Shape

  • Standard (wide body): the biggest sweet spot and fastest hands at the net. Best for doubles and newer players.
  • Elongated: more reach and more power from the baseline, with a smaller sweet spot. Suits singles and players with good timing.
  • Hybrid: sits between the two. A good choice if you are not sure.

3. Core thickness: 14mm or 16mm

  • 16mm: softer, more control, more forgiving. The safer default for most players.
  • 14mm: more pop and power, less forgiving on off-centre hits.

4. Face material

  • Fibreglass: lively and powerful, usually cheaper. Less spin.
  • Carbon fibre: more control and better spin. Most mid-range and premium paddles use it.
  • Textured or raw carbon: a gritty surface that grips the ball for maximum spin. The texture wears down with heavy use.

5. Weight

  • Light (under about 215g): quick at the net and easy on the arm, but less stable against hard drives.
  • Mid (about 215 to 235g): the balance most players are happiest with.
  • Heavy (over about 235g): more power and stability, but slower and more tiring over a long session.

Pickleball paddle brands we stock

JOOLA

JOOLA is one of the biggest names in pickleball and the paddle brand of Ben Johns. We stock the full Perseus family, from the value Heat Vision and Double Vision to the foam-core Power FX and tour-level Perseus Pro V. Our Pro V range also includes the Hyperion, Agassi and Kosmos. See the full range on our JOOLA page.

Superjockk

Superjockk is an established small independent brand. The Superjockk Ruby 3K is a carbon paddle at a lower price than the big international brands, a sensible choice if you are new to the sport or buying a second paddle.

Pickleball paddle price in India

As a rough guide to what you get at each level:

  • Entry level: fibreglass or basic carbon paddles for learning the game.
  • Mid range: carbon-faced paddles with better spin and feel. The best value for most regular players.
  • Premium: tour-level paddles such as the JOOLA Pro V. Worth it only once your strokes are consistent.

Spending more does not automatically mean playing better. A forgiving mid-range paddle will help a newer player more than a stiff, powerful tour paddle.

Complete your kit

You will need balls to go with your paddle. Outdoor balls are harder with smaller holes, while indoor balls are softer with larger holes. Frequently asked questions

Is a pickleball paddle the same as a pickleball racket?

Yes. Many players in India call it a pickleball racket, but the official term is paddle. Unlike a badminton or tennis racket, a pickleball paddle has a solid face with no strings.

Which pickleball paddle is best for beginners?

Look for a standard (wide-body) shape, a 16mm core and a mid weight. That combination gives the biggest sweet spot and the most control while you learn. You do not need a tour-level paddle to start.

Should I buy a carbon fibre or fibreglass paddle?

Carbon fibre gives more control and spin and suits most players who play regularly. Fibreglass gives more pop for less money but less spin. If you plan to play more than once a week, carbon is usually worth the extra cost.

Can I use a pickleball paddle for tournaments?

For sanctioned tournaments, the paddle must be on the approved list of the organising body. Most JOOLA paddles are approved. Check the product page for approval details before buying for competition.

How long does a pickleball paddle last?

It depends on how often and how hard you play. With regular play, the core gradually softens and the textured face wears smooth, which reduces power and spin. Dead spots or a noticeable loss of spin are signs it is time to replace it.

Can I play pickleball with a badminton or table tennis racket?

No. Pickleball uses a solid paddle and a plastic ball with holes. A badminton racket will not handle the ball, and a table tennis bat is too small for the court.

Are the paddles on SportsUncle genuine?

Yes. Every paddle we sell is 100% original. SportsUncle has supplied genuine sports equipment to players across India since 2016.
