The Yonex Astrox 99 Play 3rd Gen is a head-heavy 4U power badminton racket with a medium-flex shaft, built to help intermediate players and attacking beginners generate steep, powerful smashes. It is the most accessible model in the Astrox 99 series, priced for value in India.
Dominate the court with the Yonex Astrox 99 Play 3rd Gen the ultimate "power for everyone" badminton racket. Designed as the younger sibling to the professional Astrox 99 Pro (used by world champions), the Play version brings the same devastating smash power to beginner and intermediate players in a user-friendly, forgiving package. If you love to attack from the backcourt and want a racket that helps you generate steep, explosive smashes without requiring professional-level technique, the Astrox 99 Play is your perfect match.
Why Choose the Astrox 99 Play 3rd Gen?
The "Play" edition is specifically engineered to be more accessible than the stiff "Pro" or "Tour" models. It features a Medium Flex shaft, which acts like a whip, helping players develop swing speeds and generate massive power effortlessly.
-
Explosive Power: The head-heavy balance concentrates weight at the top, acting like a hammer to drive the shuttle down steeply.
-
Forgiving Feel: Unlike the stiff Pro version, the medium flex shaft is gentle on the arm and easier to time, reducing mishits.
-
Pro Design, Budget Price: You get the iconic look and feel of the high-end Astrox 99 series at a fraction of the cost.
Sportsuncle Expert Review:
The Yonex Astrox 99 Play (3rd Gen) is a dedicated power machine built for aggressive backcourt players. Unlike the ultra-stiff "Pro" version, this model features a forgiving, medium-flex shaft that acts like a whip. It allows intermediate players to generate massive, head-heavy smash power and deep clears without exhausting their arm. If your game strategy relies on heavy attacks, this is one of the best value-for-money upgrades available.Key Technologies
1. Rotational Generator System By applying the counterbalance theory, weight is distributed throughout the grip end, frame top, and the joint for maximum control. This allows the racket to feel head-heavy for power but transitions smoothly to the next shot, giving you the best of both worlds: Power and Speed.
2. Isometric™ Head Shape The square-shaped Isometric frame expands the "sweet spot" by 7% compared to conventional round frames. This means even off-centre shots still fly with power and precision- a crucial feature for developing players.
3. Power-Assist Bumper The 3rd Gen design features a tungsten-infused nylon bumper attached to the top of the frame. This adds weight exactly where it's needed to transfer maximum energy into the shuttle, resulting in heavier, more powerful smashes.
4. AERO+BOX Frame: an aerodynamic front section for faster swing speed combined with a box frame for a stable, solid feel at contact, so you get power without the frame feeling twitchy.
Performance Breakdown: Who Is This For?
-
For Attackers: This is a 10/10 choice. If your game strategy is "lift and smash," this racket will amplify your strengths.
-
For beginners and intermediates, the medium flex is key. It provides "easy power" (repulsion) that helps you clear the shuttle baseline-to-baseline with minimal effort.
-
For Singles Players: The head-heavy weight is ideal for the singles game where power and clears are dominant.
-
Doubles Play: While head-heavy, the Rotational Generator System makes it surprisingly agile for rear-court doubles players.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Yonex Astrox 99 Play good for beginners?
Yes. Its medium-flex shaft generates power even without perfect technique, and the isometric head is forgiving on off-centre hits. It is one of the best power rackets for attacking beginners and intermediate players.
Is the Astrox 99 Play 3rd Gen head-heavy?
Yes. It has a head-heavy balance of roughly 300 to 305 mm, which concentrates weight at the top for heavier smashes and deep clears. The Rotational Generator System keeps it manageable between shots.
What is the price of the Yonex Astrox 99 Play 3rd Gen in India?
It is priced at Rs. 3,850 on SportsUncle (MRP Rs. 5,140), strung and with free shipping across India. It is genuine Yonex stock imported by Sunrise Sports.
Astrox 99 Play or Astrox 99 Game, which should I buy?
Both are head-heavy medium-flex power rackets. The Play (China-made, full graphite) is the accessible, value option. The Game (Taiwan-made, with Tungsten and 2G-Nanomesh Neo) is a step up for developing competitive players who want a firmer, more premium feel.
What is the difference between the 2nd and 3rd Gen?
The 3rd Gen refines weight distribution via the Rotational Generator System and adds the tungsten-infused Power-Assist Bumper for a heavier, more solid smash, in the newer Black/Green colourway.
What tension should I string it at?
The 4U frame supports up to 28 lbs. We recommend 24 to 26 lbs for the best balance of power and durability.
Does it come strung, and is it genuine?
Yes, it comes factory-strung and is 100% genuine Yonex, imported by Sunrise Sports (India) Pvt. Ltd. SportsUncle sells only authentic stock.

If you order the Grip, then it will be shipped separately in a corrugated box. The grip will not be applied over the racket to avoid the removal of Barcode/MRP and other useful information. This also helps in understanding that the product is new and unused. Grip color will be assorted/Random, no specific color will be provided.
If you select Custom Stringing, the racket will be strung with the selected string at a maximum of 26 lbs (if the racket supports), otherwise at the maximum tension the racket supports. We don't provide the facility to string more than 26 lbs to avoid transit shock damage.
If you are looking for higher tension, then we suggest that you string it at your end.
There is NO Warranty/Replacement of the strings that break during play, whether that's your first shot or 10th game.
** Custom Stringing Rackets require 2 days extra time for shipping, and such orders can't be cancelled once placed.
